Gekraakt natuurlijk door critici (wat weten zij nou?) want het is een film van Lucio Fulci dus dat kan bijna niet goed zijn, tel daarbij op dat het een extreem bloederige film is met een idioot slechte dub en zwak plot. Splatterfans waarderen de film een stuk meer gelukkig



Een echtpaar (Catriona MacColl en Paolo Malco) en hun zoontje Bob (Giovanni Frezza die erg irritant gedubbed is) betrekt een landhuis wat zoals de titel al verklapt naast een kerkhof staat (het idee alleen al...) zodat pa wat beter zijn werk kan uitvoeren

Wat ze natuurlijk niet weten is dat de vorige bewoner nog steeds in het huis woont (de kelder) en organen nodig heeft om niet te sterven

Veelal bestempeld als de 3e zombiefilm uit Fulci's 4 luik na ZOMBI 2, CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD en voor THE BEYOND maar dit valt te betwijfelen aangezien ik dit niet écht een zombiefilm vind



Fulci adds several nice touches to the film propelling it above his normal gore galore outings. Don't get me wrong, there is some good gore to please fans. The opening scene shows a disemboweled man and his girlfriend stabbed through the back of her head with the knife exiting her open and screaming mouth. We get a spurting chest stabbing, a severed head, oozing blood over an indoor grave, throat slashings, a severed head rolling down stairs, scores of maggots dripping from Freudstein's open stomach, a bat attack scene, and more!



Before moving into the dreaded house, Bob notices a little girl looking out of the window of the house in a picture. She warns him not to go. Of course, Mom and Dad don't pay too much attention to what their son has to say and move in anyway. This is a nice parallel between the world through a child's eyes as opposed to the 'adult' world of his parents. It almost seems as if the children are the ones who really know what is going on. Fulci has commented that children are 'little monsters' and live in a completely different world than adults do.



Sterke punten in de film naast de goreeffecten van Giannetto De Rossi en de muziek van  Walter Rizzatti is het camerawerk van meester Sergio Salvati en de goede sfeervolle belichting

TRIVIA:

The Vestron home video release of "House By the Cemetery", which was released during the 1980s, has two reels of footage out of order. This error makes for a nearly incomprehensible film, as characters who die are seen later seen alive and running around as if they had never been killed.

There have been 4 different releases of the film so far in the UK and this info is beneficial for collectors. The cinema version was cut by 1 minute 21 secs by the BBFC and was later prosecuted in the UK as a video nasty, with all consequent video releases being heavily cut. The 1988 Elephant Video release was pre-cut by 34 secs but suffered a further 4 minutes 11 secs of BBFC cuts removing a poker murder, throat cuttings, a graphic stabbing scene and shots of disemboweled corpses, and the initial 1993 Vipco release had been pre-cut by 7 minutes 27 secs before submission. The 2001 Vipco DVD issue restored nearly all of the film's prior edits but was cut by 33 secs by the BBFC with lesser edits made to the poker murder and a throat cutting. Although willing to release the movie uncut the film had recently been prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act following the discovery of bootleg copies of the uncut version, leaving the BBFC no choice but to cut the film.

The Anchor Bay release is the complete, uncut version, containing all the gore and violence. The version on the Anchor Bay DVD also includes additional footage with Giovanni Frezza in the cellar, there are almost 20 seconds extra shots of his eyes and face plus the glowing eyes of the monster he sees.

For its American release, all scenes that featured Norman and Lucy Boyles arguing or showing any signs of marital tension were cut from the film. These edits were done because the distributors of the film felt that the marital tension subplot would alienate viewers and were removed to make the film more of a traditional "Family Moves Into A Haunted House" style movie.

Het wachten is op een goede release met de originele Italiaanse soundtrack met Engelse subs, want die dubbing is werkelijk waardeloos...

Echt? Ik vond het een leuke film, en hij lijkt zeker op The Beyond, maar die laatste vind ik toch beter. Maar die nasynchronisatie is idd slecht, dus in het Italiaans komt hij vast beter tot z'n recht.
