Ik weet niet hoe ik moet uitdrukken hoe invloedrijk deze film is op de (Euro) horror deze onofficiele sequel op DAWN OF THE DEAD (die in Italie de naam ZOMBI kreeg) en regisseur Fulci op de horrormap zette. Deze film word veelal gezien als z'n beste en is de eerste van zijn beroemde zombievierluik die verder bestaat uit CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY en THE BEYOND



Het plot heeft weinig om het lijf zoals bij de meeste films van Lucio Fulci, het is de baanbrekende gore en een aantal beroemde scenes waar onder de onderwaterzombiescene en de scene waarin een vrouw tergend langzaam met haar oog richting een splinter getrokken word die in close-up haar oog doorboort (een soortgelijke scene werd later nog eens overgedaan in THE BEYOND) die de film wereldberoemd maakte en al snel volgde talloze rip-offs (net als met NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD)





Een zeilboot komt aan in de haven met aan boord een zombie die de havenpatrouille uitdunt. Het onderzoek wat volgt leid naar een vrouw wiens vader eigenaar is van de boot en ze weet dat hij onderzoek deed op een eiland genaamd Matool waar ze samen met een journalist heen gaat om haar vader te zoeken. Eenmaal aangekomen ontdekken ze dat de lokale bevolking vooral uit zombies bestaat op zoek naar mensenvlees

De film is door de jarenheen een waardige klassieker geworden die nogal wat te kampen heeft gehad met censuur en het schoolvoorbeeld is van de jaren '80 videonastie idioterie, maar is nu sinds een paar jaar in z'n intacte vorm verkrijgbaar voor de massa en hoort zeker in iedere filmcollectie te zitten.

De Blue-Underground schijf heeft een iets betere beeldkwaliteit dan de Media Blasters dvd maar laatstgenoemde heeft een grotere selectie met extra's. Een echte fan heeft natuurlijk beide





The infamous shark vs. zombie scene was filmed in a large salt water tank and the shark was fed horse meat and sedatives before filming.

Trivia:

*  The film was written before Dawn of the Dead (1978) was released in Italy, as an action/adventure thriller with no link to George A. Romero's films. The opening and closing scenes (which take place in New York) were added to the script later when the producers wanted to cash-in on the success of Dawn.

* The make-up effects were done by renowned Italian Giannetto De Rossi. The make-up for the zombies was "caked" on in several stages and Lucio Fulci, the director, constantly referred to the extras as "walking flower pots".

* The newspaper office scene was filmed in a busy office building, and at one point the cast and crew inadvertently interrupted a meeting held by Rupert Murdoch, who angrily kicked them out.

* Several of the actors playing the zombies were actually brothers. They look so similar that some people have speculated that all the zombies were played by one man.

* As shown in trailers before the film was released, airline "barf bags" were handed out to theater moviegoers due to the unusually high amount of violence and gore for a horror film of that time.

* Enzo G. Castellari was asked to direct this film early in its development, but turned it down on the basis that he was not a fan of horror and primarily made action films. However, he suggested his friend Lucio Fulci as a possible replacement.

* Like many Italian horror films of the time, half the cast spoke only English and the other half only Italian. Many Italian films produced for international distribution filmed without sound and recorded several dialog tracks in different languages in the studio for later overdubbing. Because the actors are speaking a number of different languages (or some are speaking a non-native language phonetically), the dubbing in all versions of the film is not 100% synchronized. Ian McCulloch, Tisa Farrow, Olga Karlatos, and Stefania D'Amario were of the main English speaking cast, while Al Cliver, Auretta Gay, and Dakar were of the main Italian-speaking cast.

* Scriptwriter Dardano Sacchetti chose to take his name off the credits due to his father's death during preproduction. As a result of his loss, Sacchetti felt uncomfortable about being connected with a movie about the dead returning to a semblance of life and then being destroyed.

* Director Cameo: [Lucio Fulci] the news editor in the scene of the New York newspaper office.

* The actor scheduled to play the underwater zombie got sick at the last minute and had to be replaced by the shark's trainer.

* Hordes of the living dead stumble across the Brooklyn Bridge at the end of the film. Although a national state of emergency had been declared and the local radio station had been overrun by zombies, the traffic below still flows freely. This was due to budgetary constraints - there was not enough money to stop traffic on the bridge.

* While shooting on location in New York City, Captain Haggerty, who plays the large bald zombie who attacks the harbor patrol at the beginning of the film, walked into CBGB's (a tiny Bowery bar which was a flourishing punk rock venue at the time) in full zombie makeup complete with splattered fake blood and mud caked all over his face and body. Due to the outrageous punk styles in those days of the other bar patrons, he was barely noticed. Even the bartender never looked twice at him.

* When first submitted to the BBFC in 1980, the movie was passed with an X rating with 1 minute, 46 seconds cut. Then, with the Video Recordings Act, it was banned in 1984 as a "video nasty". It was removed from the DPP list, and the original cinema release was re-rated in 1992 with an 18 rating. In 1999, it was once again re-rated, with only 23 seconds of cuts for an 18 rating. Finally, it was passed uncut with an 18 rating in 2005, with a 91 minute run time.

* According to the production crew interviewed for the Shriek Show DVD, scenes were shot of the zombies coming out of the water in New York. They never made it into the final edit though.

* According to Ian McCulloch on the DVD commentary, the harbor patrol cops were actually off-duty policemen. The advantage was that no costumes were required as they brought their own uniforms.

* Despite being called ‘Zombi 2’, the film is not a sequel to anything. When the makers found out that there was another unrelated movie called ‘Zombie’ coming out at the same time, they added the '2' in to differentiate the two films.

# 25 October 2005 - the film went before the BBFC ratings board in the U.K, and was passed fully uncut with an '18' certificate. To date it is only available in the Anchor Bay compilation box set "Box Of The Banned".

# The 18 certificate UK cinema and early video versions were missing 1 min 46 secs of graphic violence including the splinter in the eye scene, shots of torn throats and arm biting, the zombies feasting on Paola's body and a shot of Dr Menard's bloody bitten face. The uncut version was released in the early 80s, but fell foul of the Obscene Publications Act, and was prosecuted as a "video nasty".

# In August 1999, the uncut version was submitted to the British Board of Film Classification for a video certificate, in the hope that it would fare better than previous BBFC-approved versions. This was a partial success, since the film escaped with an 18 rating after only 23 seconds of cuts, compared to the 1m 46s which was censored in the earlier video and cinema prints. Only 2 scenes were censored: the woman who gets her eye impaled on a splinter, and a later sequence in which zombies feast on her body.

# The Australian print is the same as the heavily cut UK print.

# The US version released by Anchor Bay Entertainment is the uncut, uncensored version, containing all the violence, gore, and nudity.

# Older U.S. prints (such as the Wizard Video version) have "Jerry Gross Presents" (or some equivalent) before the title. This has been removed from the more recent Anchor Bay release.

# For the U.S. dubbed version, the character name of Ann Bolt was changed to Ann Boles and the character name of Bryan Curt was changed to Brian Hull.

# Some of the productions stills and lobby cards for "Zombi 2" feature a scene that was not in the final cut of the film, featuring the fat "boat zombie" at the beginning of the film climbing out of the river in New York, presumably after being shot into the water by the policeman on the derelict boat.

# Although the Anchor Bay version is uncut in terms of gore, it is actually missing some brief footage (a few frames at a time) during a few scenes:

    * The opening frames have been slightly trimmed, as well as the opening music.
    * The scene with the professor holding up his gun has been shortened.
    * The phone booth scene is missing some footage.
    * The shark attack sequence has been slightly cut.
    * A full frontal nudity shot of Olga Karlatos in the shower is missing. Reportedly, the upcoming Shriek Show DVD under the title "Zombi 2" will restore all the above cuts that were trimmed from the Anchor Bay Release

# The 91 minute, uncut version of this film finally passed the Australian film classification board (the OFLC) in February 2004, effectively ending the censorship of this title in Australia. It is to be released on DVD. Prior VHS video releases, on both the Starbase and Video Excellence labels, were heavily cut.

Een van de eerste Italiaanse exploitatiefilms die ik zag, dankzij de Italian Shock DVD (dat is nog steeds de enige DVD versie die ik in huis heb). Ik was meteen hooked.

Bij de Cultvideotheek hadden ze diezelfde gesigneerd door Fulci

Dat heb ik met z'n hele zombievierluik. Met CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD het meest en met THE BEYOND het minst maar allen blijven ze in je hoofd rondspoken
